Preparing for the Next Stage
At New Leaf Academy of North Carolina boarding school for girls, transition to the next stage of life begins on the day of enrollment. We use a framework for building awareness, skills, and plans for students and families called the Life Learning Plan model (LLP). Components of this process are incorporated throughout our program and will crystallize in the Star phase, as your daughter begins to envision her return home and focus on the transition process.
Through the work you will be doing with your assigned counselor, Family IQ, Family Emails curriculum, the parent seminars and finally as a Star family, you, your daughter and the entire family will be prepared to face the challenge of life together after NLANC. We understand that there are many possibilities for your daughter after leaving us and we want you to be as prepared as possible.
Transition and Life Learning Plan work will begin in earnest when your daughter reaches the Moon Phase. The transition team will be in touch with you as far as scheduling the Family Workshop and implementing the LLP. The family workshop is a three-day event that helps the family develop a common language around the goals listed below. It also incorporates a variety of lessons and activities to help everyone understand the process so they can complete each curriculum unit of the LLP.
During this time, your daughter will also begin the student LLP group that focuses on understanding and completing her workbook. All of this culminates in the completion of the LLP documents that guide your family through the LLP goals. Follow-up phone calls and emails are conducted prior to and well after your daughter's graduation. These communications exist to support the NLA graduate and her family as they enter the next stage of their lives together.
Supporting the goal of improving family structure and communication, the Life Learning Plan is designed to:
- Build each family member's awareness
- Support the practice of new communication skills
- Support the practice of new behaviors skills
- Build a relevant plan based on each family member's own values, visions, roles, and beliefs skills
- Establish clear house rules skills
- Establish consequences for unacceptable behavior skills
- Create and maintain personal boundaries for each family member skills
- Help families make choices for educational environments skills
- Help choose local professionals to support family goals skills
The goal of Alumnae Services is to support the student and family in a seamless transition between New Leaf Academy of NC and their next school or placement. New Leaf Academy of North Carolina will provide alumnae services for the families of students who graduate from our program. These services will better enhance the transition of students from NLANC to more traditional settings and are meant to be a supplemental support system for the family. We work in collaboration with each family's primary support team at home, which may include a variety of service providers, to expedite the building of their relationship with our graduates and families so that they can continue to grow and succeed. Alumnae Services will be directed by the Family Support Services Team that is familiar with the students and their individual needs.
